Gomez has been busy, but I figured it was the road that was stealing away their time. They’ve been spending more time recording than I thought. Gomez is one of the most underrated groups in the world. You only need to hear what they call B-sides and rarities to realize how fantastic they are.
I can’t get enough of “Bring Your Lovin’ Back In”. It’s more melodic than Gomez usually gets. “We Haven’t Turned Around (X-Ray)” is something alright. I think they’ve been sniffing the liquid skin just a bit too much. And I guess I’m right because they wrote a song called “High On Liquid Skin”, and I’m not lying when I say I only noticed the song after the thought.
“Shitbag” mixes in some Creedence Clearwater Revival with some unearthly ambience. “The Cowboy” is spirited if not nonsensical. Yippee. Then comes the commercial version of The Beatles’ “Getting Better”. The album starts hot, fades, then ends with you opening disc two.
The Machismo EP is sweet bliss. “Machismo” is absolutely one of my favorite Gomez songs ever. “Do’s and Don’ts” aches like a psychedelic blister. What would a Gomez album be without a song over ten minutes? They call this opus “The Dajon Song”.
The EP, although only five songs, may be better than its counterpart. Thankfully you get twenty songs for what is a real sweetheart of a deal.
