Corporate Line: THE OTHER SIDE, the highly anticipated first-ever acoustic CD from Grammy-nominated rock group Godsmack. Produced by vocalist Sully Erna and mixed by David Bottrill (who produced the band’s 2003 chart-topping, platinum-selling album FACELESS), the record features acoustic renditions of Godsmack hits and three brand-new tracks.
The Good:
“Touche” – Sully actually sings—until the chorus where he goes back to that patented growl. It’s as if Sully wasn’t sure he couldcan sing yet this song specifically shows that he can.
The Average:
“Running Blind” – Perhaps more than any other Godsmack song you’ll hear Sully’s true roots and idols. “Running Blind” mixes Metallica with Alice In Chains.
“Asleep” – Completely toned down—makes you wonder what might be on the horizon.
“Re-Align” – Again Sully gets that tortured strain in his voice as he clears out his closet with his idol worship of Alice In Chains. The band is acoustic and sounds entirely different—if only Sully took this chance to do the same.
The Ugly: Nothing.
Frankly: Godsmack offers fans something to tide them over until their next full- length release. Would they have offered some of their hits totally torn down or at least three more songs to make this a full release it might bebeen easier to recommend. Godsmack doesn’t reinvent the wheel, if anything they offer something that Alice In Chains did ten years ago—however it’s a new twist in what might be growth for the band.
