Goldfinger had a close call with stardom when radio found “Here In Your Bedroom”. Since then, they’ve released a great full-length cover album, Darrin’s Coconut Ass, without incident, and now comes Stomping Ground, with its sharp, tactful punk tracks. The first two tracks, “I’m Down” and “Pick A Fight”, have the potential to break them out once again, but radio is so fickle today that it’s impossible to even predict what could happen. And listening to Stomping Ground, you get the feeling that Goldfinger doesn’t give a damn if they see the light of day on the top 40.
“Counting The Days” goes from raw to passionate. “You Think It’s A Joke” is more commercial whereas “Bro” kicks you where it counts. Remember Nena’s “99 Red Balloons” about sixteen years ago? Well, Goldfinger does a great cover of it in both English and German. This album is a lot of fun. It’s not for those who like their music easy and neat. If you like music with an edge and heart, Goldfinger is here for you.
