David Garza is not an ordinary singer/songwriter. He doesn’t do the same song a hundred times, he doesn’t mimic some popular vocalists. He does his own thing.
“Say Baby” is a crack at the current pop movement. “Drone” is a raw pinch. It’s a shame to admit that the good songs are few and far in between.
There are some sticky points. “God’s Hand” just doesn’t do it for me. I think I’ve figured out what bugs me. Even when Garza kicks out a nice track like “Crown Of Thorns”, he puts in this sickly vocal jitterbug that ruins it. But there are songs like “Alone” where he again gives the style a whirl and keeps it well under control.
It seems someone out there will dig the whole Tiny Tim timbre that Garza has inherited, but I just find it overly annoying. For a guy with a decent voice, I can’t quite figure out why he wants to sound so revolting.
