Gloria Gaynor – Interview

Gloria Gaynor

One-on-One with Gloria Gaynor!

Would you call this a comeback?

I recall my recording of this latest album “I wish you love” and the two #1 singles off of that album a comeback to the United States not a comeback in general because I never left my career. Ive been traveling to Europe and some 80 countries around the world performing the 7-8 albums that I have recorded in Europe over the last 15 years along with the songs that I have been made popular with here in the US and around the world so that its only a comeback to the United States.

Did you ever think “I Will Survive” would last as long as it has?

I believed when I first read the lyrics to “I Will Survive” that because it was a timeless lyric, I believed that everyone would be able to relate to it. I further believed that as long as it was played it would be popular and I believed that it would be played for a long long time.

What is the first thing that comes to mind when one of your songs
(recently Men in Black 2) shows up in a film or tv show?

The first question that comes to mind is is this my version and if it is my
version the next question is how and where will they use it in the film.

What was your hope for the new record?

The hope was and still is for my new recording that it becomes #1 on the
billboard hot 100 and stays #1 for a long time.

I was reading reviews of your book from fans.. and their biggest complaint was that you hadn’t talked enough about disco. any reason behind that?

I’ve saved all the disco stuff for my film script.

Fans also want to know what was happening behind the scenes in disco..

I don’t think anything was happening specifically behind the disco scene. I think what was happening behind the disco scene was happening behind every other area of music. People were living their lives just like entertainers do in any part of the entertainment field.

Did you see disco’s effect in modern music?

I think the effect that disco has had in modern music is that it has made people who are performing the music more concerned about keeping the beat dancable and perhaps putting so much emphasis on making music that people can feel physically that they put less interest on meaningful lyrics.

What would you say to everyone out there that would say disco was
insignificant?

I would say that disco isn’t any less significant than anything else that use to enjoy themselves, each other or to release the tension of an otherwise stressful day.

One fan said they were surprised to realize how normal you really were.
How does that strike you?

I would say that that is normal because when someone consider you a star,
they consider that you are and have what the word star implies. This is
unobtainable, unreachable or untouchable so when someone does meet me and
find out that I am normal they are naturally surprised.

When did you know you could sing?

I believe I knew I could sing when my neighbor heard me singing and
commented that she thought she was hearing the radio.

Did you watch the recent american idol tv show?

No I did not watch the recent american idol tv show because I have been on
the road performing for too much to have time to watch television.

Who do you see in music today as a great singer?

Among the great singers are Whitney Houston, Lauren Hill, Jeffrey Osborne, Celine Dion and Marc Anthony.

If you could say one thing to the world what would it be?

Seek truth and surrender to it!
