Fuel – Natural Selection

Fuel
Artist: Fuel
Title: Natural Selection
Label: Sony
Rating: 5/10

Company Line:
“Natural Selection” features a dozen tracks produced by Michael Beinhorn (Ozzy Osbourne, Soundgarden and Marilyn Manson) and Carl Bell, and mixed by Andy Wallace (Foo Fighters, Korn and Nirvana). The new album captures a band that is mature enough to know its strengths, and ambitious enough to try new things.

The Good:
“Die Like This” and “Luck” – Rare songs on the album that get your attention.

The Average:
“Down Inside Of You” and “Million Miles” – The typical Fuel attempt at a radio single that don’t work. It’s not lost on me, but these songs aren’t much different from what they’ve given us before.
“Falls On Me” – If you looked in the dictionary under generic rock ballad this would be one of the examples.
“Won’t Back Down” – Wasn’t great when they released it on the Daredevil soundtrack and certainly a remix isn’t going to fix it.
“Quarter” – The thrashing guitar gives the appearance that Fuel has gotten heaven, but it’s just an illusion as we listen to Brett Scallion sing “I Walk Alone” which sounds like a bad Godsmack retread.

The Ugly:
Nothing really.

Frankly: Fuel sound like their tires ran out of tread and now they’ve gone back and bought a new pair, only they are the same as the old ones.
