Adam Freeland – Tectonics

Adam Freeland
Artist: Adam Freeland
Title: Tectonics
Label: Ultra
Rating: 6/10

The founder of nu school breaks, Adam Freeland has just produced a mix of his favorite tracks that will certainly cause the earth to shake. For people that don’t know what breakbeat is, there’s a quick lesson to be learned from Tectonics. This style of beats is sort of a hybrid between house and hip-hop with quick pauses and heavy bass giving the music that breakdancing quality. Freeland has been crowned with residency at the world’s hottest clubs, from Fabric to Twilo, this guy has played them all. If you feast on breakbeats, then this record is your Thanksgiving dinner.

Adam Freeland is a visionary in terms of creating atmosphere, and he seems to do it so effortlessly on this mix. “Pig Chase” by Makesome Breakesome hammers home a nice fat bounce as Adam showcases his dj talents. Breakbeat is not my cup of tea, but I can totally appreciate the artistry in this dj’s sound and style. Adam’s mixes are one of the first dj records I ever heard where the song does not sound as if it was faded into the next. Using an atmospheric guide, the transitions are smooth as butter. Also, Tectonics won respect because Adam was not afraid to mix in some old school beats from B.L.I.M’s “Chronologic” and 3 Mile Island’s “Liposuction”. Adam flips on one of his side project premium works with Tsunami One and BT (“Hip Hop Phenomenon”) to issue some funky breaks to get down to. Later as the mix winds down, Adam shows why he’s the Breakbeat Ambassador as he shifts gears from the hip-hop beats to more hard pounding breakbeats. Vigi and Flip’s “Freak Frequency” brings somewhat of a club feel to it, giving the mix the final burst energy before crashing softly into the electronic smoothness of “Juvenile Delinquent”. Look for Adam Freeland to be spinning at a club near you very shortly as he embarks on his North American tour.
