Corporate Line: That, in a nutshell, is The Battle For Everything, the follow-up to Five For Fighting’s second album, the smash America Town. It’s also a finger in the eye of all who can’t see the forest for that one huge tree — “Superman” — that fills the foreground. Even more, it’s proof that Ondrasik is a singer/songwriter with real staying power.
The Good:
Zippo.
The Average:
“NYC Weather Report” – Pretty – lyrically lacking.
“100 Years” – Sweet melody.
“The Devil in the Wishing Well” – John Ondrasik has the knack for melody, although eerily similar to Elton John, it’s too bad he didn’t spend more time on the lyrics.
The Ugly:
“Infidel” – The more Ondrasik tries to rock the worse it gets.
“Disneyland” – This song is a lyrical mess about Disneyland. Ondrasik can’t be serious.
Frankly: Five For Fighting offers really good melodic pop rock songs. What Five For Fighting doesn’t offer are good lyrics and depth. The Battle For Everything is monotonous, the sort of album you listen to for unwinding or when you need some sleep.
