Everclear – Songs From An American Movie Vol. 1

Everclear
Artist: Everclear
Title: Songs From An American Movie Vol. 1
Label: Capitol
Rating: 7/10

Everclear releases more than singles. Each album they put out is filled to the brim with something worth listening to. Their latest release, Songs From An American Movie, is no different. And perhaps even more than in the past, this album offers diversity and substance.

“Here We Go Again” samples some Public Enemy, but sounds very much Everclear. The album’s first single, “Wonderful”, is also signature Everclear and came right out of the same factory where previous hits like “Father Of Mine” and “Santa Monica” came. Art Alexakis has a real knack for writing great song progressions from verse to chorus to bridge. It’s elementary, but still harder than you might think. If it weren’t, we’d all be rock stars.

Van Morrison’s “Brown Eyed Girl” will certainly go without being recognized by kid’s as a cover. The version is nice, even if it doesn’t hold a candle to the original. “The Honeymoon Song” tangos with the shimmy of a Hawaiian night with slide guitar and Alexakis adding a fantastic vocal. “Otis Redding” is a journey through life past and present as Alexakis sings over and over, “I don’t want to be wasted no more.”

Everclear has emerged and matured. Their sound, once raw and grimy, has now found a better place, one that pays more mind to both sensible melodies and emotions that run deeper than anger.
