Faith Evans – A Faithful Christmas

Faith Evans
Artist: Faith Evans
Title: A Faithful Christmas
Label: Capitol
Rating: 5/10

FILE UNDER: Not such a Faithful Christmas.

THE GREAT:
“Mistletoe & Holly” – This is the first track where Faith does something that sounds like a Christmas song. It’s a surprise how she covers this Sinatra classic so beautifully.

THE AVERAGE:
“Happy Holiday” – Nice—nothing extraordinary.
“The Day That Love Began” – Is this even a Christmas song? When you can’t tell right away a song is for the holiday then leave it behind.
“Soulful Christmas” – Evans doesn’t knock this James Brown Christmas song out of the park—she tries too hard to be faithful to the original rendition. The rap is painful to listen to.
“White Christmas” – Overdone. Boring. Monotonous.
“This Christmas” – The drum beat is too out of synch with this style of song. It ruins a track that might have been quite good otherwise.

THE BAD:
“Santa Baby” – It seems as if it is mandatory for every female singer to cover this song and it gets worse with every rendition.

FRANKLY: Faith Evans’ take on Christmas leaves a lot to be desired. Sure she can and does a great job on “Mistletoe & Holly.” The problem is that too many artists go out and do songs that are either all wrong for them or too faithful to the original and never sounds as good as that original rendition.
