Elefant – The Black Magic Show

Elefant
Artist: Elefant
Title: The Black Magic Show
Label: Hollywood
Rating: 3/10

FILE UNDER: The Cure for 2006?

CORPORATE LINE: THE BLACK MAGIC SHOW comes two years after the release of ELEFANT’s critically acclaimed full-length debut, Sunlight Makes Me Paranoid. The New York-based quartet (Argentine vocalist Diego Garcia, guitarist Mod, bassist Jeff James and drummer Kevin McAdams) came together in 2001 and quickly made their mark with a dark, seductive sound that enthralled critics and fans alike.

THE GOOD:
Nothing even close.

THE AVERAGE:
“Lolita” – This was picked as the first single because there was nothing else to pick. The style is tired and the many attempts at recreating the ‘80s have been utter disasters.
“Brasil” – The only tolerable song.

THE BAD:
“Black Magic Show” – The opening introduction is a poor excuse for a Sgt. Pepper rip-off.
“Why” – Yawn. This wouldn’t even be good enough to be filler on a Cure album.
“My Apology” – An absolutely horrible song.

FRANKLY: One reason we were happy to escape the ‘80s was the terrible music. Elefant is bound and determined to bring the sounds of the Cure and Joy Division back on the scene. It’s hard to get behind that revolution. The Black Magic Show should disappear without a trace.
