Missy Elliott – Da Real World

Missy Elliott
Artist: Missy Elliott
Title: Da Real World
Label: Elektra
Rating: 7/10

Missy isn’t going to conform to the hip-hop world that surrounds her, and her latest record, Da Real World, does a lot to prove that she is on top of her game. Timbaland is again behind the board, helping Missy to take it to that next level.

The first track, “Beat Biters”, treads on those who ‘borrowed’ beats from the dynamic duo in the past. “Busa Rhyme” finds Eminem breaking it down with Missy. The flow is fresh. This is a track that will be studied by all students of hip-hop. The first single, “She’s A Bitch”, isn’t for the uneducated. The rap flow is signature Missy: sly, shrewd, and powerful. “She’s A Bitch” isn’t exactly what it seems to be. Missy hides her rhetoric behind a screen of rhymes that will burn you down to ashes. “All N My Grill” instrumentally sounds like Coolio’s “Gangsta’s Paradise” and features guest appearances by Nicole and Big Boi from Outkast. If you like Redman, you’ll be in for a treat when he flows in and out of Missy’s laid back flow on “Dangerous Mouths”.

The slow jam “You Don’t Know” could be the soundtrack for the Jerry Springer show. The message is simple: don’t even attempt to steal my boyfriend or it will be the end of the world, as you know it. “Stickin Chickens” features Aaliyah and Da Brat and is for all the players out there. But it isn’t about giving them props; it’s about calling them o_t. Be forewarned.

As fresh as Missy’s rhymes are, it is Timbaland who steals the show, even if it is from behind the scenes. Timbaland is like the Wizard of Oz throwing switches and leaving the world in awe. The one difference between Timbaland and the Wizard is that Timbaland is no faade.
