Embrace – Out of Nothing

Embrace
Artist: Embrace
Title: Out of Nothing
Label: Lava
Rating: 7/10

CORPORATE LINE: There isn’t enough music in the world today that manages to truly elevate the listener with its epic intentions and heartfelt emotions, but Embrace want to change all that. The Anglo five-piece specializes in crafting the kind of unforgettable songs that adroitly balance a profound sense of personal intimacy with anthemic hooks and sweeping choruses. Blending the fervent optimism of U2 and the majesty of The Verve, Embrace wants everyone to be singing along and still feel like the songs were written just for them.

THE GREAT:
“Ashes” – Sounds like Noel Gallagher doing his famous choruses that grow and grow seemingly uniting everything in its path.
“Wish ‘Em All Away” – Again the anthem—the difference is this one gets up there and takes you with it.

THE AVERAGE:
“Gravity” – Gravity pulled this song right back to the earth and never allowed it to become a star.
“Someday” – Again, a song that comes from the Oasis vein however it does nothing more than pretend it’s larger than it truly is.
“Looking As You Are” – A pretty song without substance.

THE BAD: Nothing.

FRANKLY: Embrace sounds like a group that is trying too hard. Each song attempts to build up to a monster hit with choruses that want to be an Oasis-style epic. No song on Out of Nothing comes close to any Oasis hit. Embrace has a knack and perhaps in the future they’ll write a hit to match their ambition.
