I liked Crocodiles. That is when Echo And The Bunnymen was raw, untamed, and ready to take on the world. Flowers doesn’t revisit days of old although it does bring together the formidable team of singer Ian McCulloch and guitarist Will Sergeant.
If you heard Evergreen, you may have wondered what in the hell happened to the Bunnymen. Flowers doesn’t suffer from the same fate, but you still have to question the album’s direction. “King Of Kings” comes to the realization that life is changing as McCulloch sings, “I’m the king of kings/ wearing broken wings/ I’ve lost my crown.”
Flowers suffers most from sounding too monotonous. It never seems to break a sweat. Between a shabby mix job and less quality backing these two original Bunnymen, you question if there is still a future here. Word has it that McCulloch is doing a solo album, and it makes you wonder if they guy was saving songs or if he has really lost his crown.
