Jermaine Dupri – Instructions

Jermaine Dupri
Artist: Jermaine Dupri
Title: Instructions
Label: So So Def
Rating: 4/10

Jermaine Dupri is the proven hit maker. There is no argument there, but his own singles haven’t always been all that interesting. Instructions is more like an all-star album as every track finds another rapper taking point while Dupri hides in the background.

Ludacris booms on “Welcome To Atlanta”, but Dupri ruins the track when he starts spouting “yo” a few hundred times and then tries to rap. Again, Dupri turns another decent track, “Get Some” featuring Usher, into a mess. Dupri has no rhymes and his rap style is weak. He can write great hooks, but his style is dead. The once interesting high-pitched twang now sounds annoying. “Hate Blood” is another chance for him to redeem himself but he can’t. Jadakiss beams, but nothing can save the poor intro given by Dupri.

“Bounce” announces Dupri on “Supafly”, which is only the beginning to another completely asinine track full of self-props and other boasts coming out of Dupri’s ass.

Jermaine Dupri might be a good producer and writer, although I could argue the point that a lot of what he has done is clichéd and trite, but as a solo artist he’s nowhere near the likes of a Ludacris. Instructions is complete nonsense and proves that, as a rapper, Dupri is nowhere near as good as to the true hip-hop powers of today.
