THE LINE: Posers or the real deal?
THE GREAT:
“Snowden” – This is more like the Doves you’d expect. Everyone will compare Coldplay and the Doves but there is a varied difference. “Snowden” certainly could give any Coldplay song a run for its bittersweet money.
“Walk In Fire” – A hauntingly delicious song that will inspire repeated plays.
“One of These Days” – It’s a toe tapping, head bobbing song. Does that describe it well enough?
THE AVERAGE:
“Some Cities” – Anyone that is a fan will try very hard to make believe this song sounds great. It’s a delicious song and yet it has something missing.
“Black and White Town” – Starts with a real familiarity but never sparks a song worthy of such timelessness.
THE BAD:
Nothing.
FRANKLY: The Doves can on occasion startle you with their beauty and brilliance. Although Some Cities isn’t a masterpiece it’s certainly one of the best records released this year. It’s not the wake up call that rock ‘n’ roll needs but it’s sure to be an album that you are happy you’ve made your own.
