DJ Icey – Essential Mix

DJ Icey
Artist: DJ Icey
Title: Essential Mix
Label: Sire
Rating: 8/10

With the release of his Essential Mix, DJ Icey joins the small and elite class of DJ dance wiz Peter Tong, the ever-popular Fatboy Slim, and the multi-talented producer/DJ Paul Oakenfold, all who have released their own triumphant Essential Selection mixes this past year. It’s about time this hardworking DJ gets the props he deserves, as he is known throughout the dance community as the king of breakbeats. By day, DJ Icey runs his own label, Zone Records, and by night he’s a bass-n-break delivery boy who serves up the intense beats fast and steady.

DJ Icey personally hand-picked sixteen of his favorite tracks to mix and produce for your dancing and listening pleasure. The mixing on Icey’s record is absolutely flawless, track to track. From the opening breakbeat sequences of Crustation’s (Freestylers Mix) “Purple” to DJ Icey’s remix of “Supersonic”, he leaves you bopping your head and stomping your feet. In the middle of the mix, Icey shows his diversity as he introduces the hybrid house and breaks of “Pumpin” by Novy vs. Eniac. Then, like a mad scientist, he fuses together the electro mix of Kay Cee’s “Escape”. Toward the end of the set, Icey lets his Florida roots show as he deliveries that B-boy house beat that made him famous at the legendary club The Edge. Songs for the B-boys and B-girls include Icey’s own “Chain Reaction” and “First Contact” by DJ Godfather.

For a man who has somehow avoided the spotlight with this mix of tunes, it will be hard for DJ Icey not to step into the limelight. From his experience playing every club and room imaginable, DJ Icey knows how to keep people bopping to the beat. His mixes are hybrids of many different forms of dance music that range from funky breaks to elements of house to even hip-hop. If you get the chance to see him live, I strongly suggest you do it. Icey knows great beats.
