The Deadlights – The Deadlights

The Deadlights
Artist: The Deadlights
Title: The Deadlights
Label: Elektra
Rating: 5/10

The Deadlights have been making noise on the metal circuit for over five months, touring with the likes of Static-X, Coal Chamber, and Slipknot, and now they are ready to conquer the free world with the release of their self-titled debut album. Sylvia Massey of Tool and Powerman 5000 fame was brought in to take the challenge of molding the raw talent of The Deadlights into a metal giant hopeful. The record follows the heavy metal handbook exactly, with properly distorted vocals and a toned down style for additional push.

The Deadlights’ lead vocalist, Duke, has a singing ability ranging from intense death mental to sincerely tranquil. The first track, “Bitter”, features Duke’s in-your-face metal approach, but on “Sweet Oblivion”

and “Foolish Pride” he’s all about being in touch with his sensitive side. Throughout much of the record, his vocals are pumped through filters that make his voice sound different on every track. And Duke can change his gears and scream when need be to make The Deadlights sound insane.

Between Sylvia’s ear for heavy tones and The Deadlights’ smash and thrash style, they put together tracks worth getting fired up about. The first single, “Amplifier”, comes out at you like a heavy metal storm from the heavens above. “Junk” and “Sado” are testament to the fact that they know how to rip up a killer metal riff and have potential within the future of the metal genre. The record closes out with “Falling Down”, an exploration into desert music, featuring a sitar, acoustic guitars, and percussion. It’s not typical of the band’s signature style, but is one of the best sounding cuts on the debut. Heads up for The Deadlights.
