CORPORATE LINE: Set up by two acclaimed albums and in the past few months playing live to half-a-million fans, American Hi-Fi turns up the volume with its Maverick debut, Hearts on Parade, produced by Butch Walker. Led by Stacy Jones, American Hi-Fi scores the pop big-time with Hearts on Parade and its lead track “The Geeks Get The Girls”.
THE GREAT:
Zippo.
THE AVERAGE:
“Maybe Won’t Do” – Atypical pop rock from a band that is average at best.
“Hell Yeah” – Not only is the opening … breathing… stolen but the rest of the song is little more than a rock formula that has been utilized at least a zillion times by Cheap Trick.
“We Can’t Be Friends” – Only the chorus saves this pathetic attempt at rapping by Stacy Jones who tries his best to invoke Blondie’s “Rapture.” It doesn’t happen. In fact its near embarrassing.
THE BAD:
“The Geeks Get The Girls” – Even the geeks won’t dig this.
“Separation Anxiety” – Singing through your nose works for Liam Gallagher—not Stacy Jones.
“Where Did We Go Wrong?” – American Hi-fi with a weak attempt at Ska.
FRANKLY: American Hi-Fi is going to try and ride their punk-pop-rock formula until the well runs dry—its run dry. Butch Walker produces and does another hack job—it sounds a lot like Walker style songs he did with Marvelous 3 minus his cool rock voice. Jones is very average as a singer. By track three you’ll be ready to bail. At only 38 minutes this is barely worth $3.80 let alone $15.
