Deadboy and the Elephantmen- We Are Night Sky

Deadboy and the Elephantmen
Artist: Deadboy and the Elephantmen
Title: We Are Night Sky
Label: Fat Possum
Rating: 5/10

FILE UNDER: Hmmm… A little Bowie and a little White Stripes.

CORPORATE LINE: One guy. One girl. No, they aren’t siblings, they never been married, haven’t even messed around.

THE GREAT:
“Stop, I’m Already Dead” – An interesting song that doesn’t inspire sunny skies—but it will inspire you to sing along.

THE AVERAGE:
“How Long The Night Was” – The only thing this song inspires how much badly singer Dax Riggs is trying to sound like David Bowie.
“Ancient Man” – As intriguing as it sounds the more you listens the more it doesn’t have anything exciting other than a nice melody.
“No Rainbow” – Too slow and monotonous and without any rhyme or reason to get invested.
“Walking Stick” – This is too White Stripes.

THE BAD:
“Break It Off” – Sounds as if it were recorded in a real garage. Maybe it was. The problem is that in the era of digital music who wants to hear a bad recording? Or one that is made to sound like a bad recording on purpose? There is no excuse. If the song sucks then don’t record it. Don’t try to make it sound cool to offset the song that is missing.

FRANKLY: Something that bugs me more than anything is when a band copies another. Deadboy & the Elephantmen have a guitar player and singer who is male and a drummer who is female. No other members. Sound familiar? It was cool when the White Stripes did it. Now it comes off as a bad retread. They don’t sound exactly like the White Stripes—I’ll give them that—because some of the songs sound like Bowie. Try something original.
