Blink-182 – Enema of the State

Blink-182
Artist: Blink-182
Title: Enema of the State
Label: MCA
Rating: 7/10

Blink is back. With a new label, but the same old punk rockin’ and power cord playin’ carefree attitude, they rip through the twelve tracks on their latest album, Enema of the State. I think it helps tremendously that they seem to love what they’re doing; it shows. And they don’t mind making fun of anything, including themselves, in the process. On the track “Going Away To College”, lead vocalist Mark Hoppus proclaims, “I acted like an ass.”

For those who just assume they won’t like this album because they don’t like punk, think twice. Blink 182 adds a little pop to the punk, slowing it down a tad, making it more likable to the non-punkers. For the fans, if you liked Dude Ranch, you will like this album; they bear a lot of similarities. The whiney vocals and childish humor put you in an upright mood, but can get a little annoying after a while. The simple melody combined with solid drums and a wandering bass suits their theme. The single that asks, “What’s my age again?” explodes into a strong chorus explaining that “nobody likes you when you’re twenty-three.” I suggest that you, whoever you are, spiked hair or not, give this album a listen.
