Before Dark are billed as another TLC. I’m not sure it’s fair to put them into such a corner. There are a few similarities, but Before Dark has a spirit more in line with Brandy than with TLC. The group has fantastic harmonies and hooks galore without being too powder-puff.
I found the opener, “How Could You”, to be fun, but “Monica” is the song that found me singing over and over. The angelic harmony at the end gave me fits of joy. Their voices may not be the greatest in the world, but they know how to use them.
If you’re looking for a great love song, you need not look any further than “It’s All About You”. “Daydream” is a great track with its mix of emotion that never goes too slow or too fast.
Before Dark has a strong freshman release. Given the recent flavor of radio, it’d be hard not to see these girls playing in the ears of all Top 40 listeners. Daydreamin’ is solid, worthy a listen if not a dedication.
