The Waterboys – A Rock in the Weary Land

The Waterboys
Artist: The Waterboys
Title: A Rock in the Weary Land
Label: Razor & Tie
Rating: 9/10

Last year A Rock In The Weary Land was released in the UK amidst critical acclaim. Then their label in the States dropped them and they had nowhere to go. Now here it is, across the pond for all to hear.

Mike Scott, the frontman and only real constant member, has been sort of an enigma. The smart, cunning, and occasionally brilliant lyricist mingles rock with script. After fifteen or so years, The Waterboys sound as vibrant as ever. “Let It Happen” was such a surprise. I had to listen to it a few dozen times to believe it was the same group. It starts out as a rock song and goes on to be something entirely different. It’s six-plus minutes of curiosity.

Curious is the atmosphere Scott creates. It’s Pink Floyd rooted and I can’t begin to explain how much this album is sweeping me up, just like “The Charlatan’s Lament”. There is no way to decide which tracks you like best. Just as you’ve made up your mind you get hit with something like “Is She Conscious?” or the absolute anthem “My Love Is My Rock In The Weary Land”. Epic is the only way to explain this journey.
