Company Line: La Musica Negra, as produced by Rob Schnapf (Beck, Guided By Voices, Elliot Smith), takes its fury mostly from the ancient Bible-country conflict betwixt the pious and the prurient.
The Good:
“Way Out West” – Good melody that will have you singing along.
“I, Pistol” – Their sound hasn’t changed, but here it doesn’t seem to matter.
“Devil In Miss Jones” – The one grungy track that doesn’t sound tired.
“Me And Yr Sister”
The Marginal:
“Killing Floor” – The forced oh’s don’t make it better.
“All The Saints” – Nice melody too bad there isn’t much else.
The Ugly:
“White Girls” – Huh?
Frankly: Verbena hasn’t shed their grunge skins. It’s not that it’s bad, but it can get dreary and boring. Maybe next time they can give us something new.
