The Charlatans UK are one of the rare Brit bands that have lasted for a decade. Many come and many go, but the Charlatans are still here making great music. They have found love, and it seems the clouds have parted for a much cheerier outlook on life.
“You’re So Pretty – We’re So Pretty” has the Stones, the rolling kind, written all over it. “And If I Fall” is another beautiful track, more Charlatans than any track on the album.
Singer Tim Burgess breaks out the highest falsetto I’ve ever heard him sing on “Judas”, where life is found to be great as he sings about ‘sweet, sweet love.’ Amen. Again he decides to take it on high as he preaches “Love Is The Key”. It is representative of this new sound, closely related to the British musical hierarchy, the Rolling Stones. After a few songs where Burgess takes on this falsetto, you do find that it wears on you. Even when he breaks in and out of it on “I Just Can’t Get Over Losing You”, you find yourself hoping he doesn’t find his way back into his highness.
I’ve always liked the Charlatans, and have always hated that damned UK on the end, because they make great music. Sometimes it doesn’t make sense what they are up to. Listen to “The Bell And The Butterfly”, which is just an instrumental.
