Where has the career of Winona Ryder gone? I remember a time when that hazel-eyed beauty could do no wrong. Now it’s what’s right that’s hard to come by.
Lost Souls is a mess. If it’s trying to cash in on the boo’s of Halloween, then it may have struck gold. Just don’t expect to ever want to see this thing again. Perhaps the tales of exorcism are best left to the original and scariest, The Exorcist.
Here, Winona Ryder plays the part of Maya Larkin, a catholic schoolteacher who uncovers the presence of the almighty evil. Possessed once herself, she now seems to be the cover girl for the possessed and the otherwise. I think I’m confusing myself, but this film won’t leave you in a state of disbelief, or belief for that matter. It just hangs out there, oh, so mundane. There are pieces of the film that deserve some words. The scenes where Maya is hallucinating are pretty scary.
With a script that is average, borrowing freely from many sources, such as The Exorcist, The Shining, and Roman Polanski, Lost Souls is everything the title says, lost and without soul.
