If you plan on seeing The Grinch, I can only say you wont be disappointed. Finally a movie that lives up to the hype. It starts off kind of slow, but Jim Carrey gets it cooking as the film progresses.
The thing that worried me most was that the original cartoon is only twenty-six minutes long. So what, right? Well, that means director Ron Howard and writers Jeffrey Price and Peter S. Seaman had to take some serious liberties in adding scenes and scenarios that all led to the ending originally penned by Dr. Seuss. Often the new scenes are without Jim Carrey, but once he makes an appearance on the screen, it brightens more than all the lights in Whoville.
Speaking of lights.
The effects are something special. Too often we call them special effects when they arent special at all. You only have to know the original cartoon and all its bizarre and cool little intricate things, like the Whos silly inventions, hairstyles, and even the village, to realize the visual undertakings. Its all reproduced here with a cartoonish effect that catches you daydreaming about living there yourself.
The movie is just out of this world as you venture into the Grinchs lair. Jim Carrey is at his zaniest without completely leaving character. I dont think Im going out on a limb to say this is his best film ever. If Carrey wasnt in this film youd probably be reading a whole other review. I cant even imagine The Grinch with another person behind the mask. The actions, quips, everything Carrey does here is magic and that is exactly what this movie needed.
Along with the scripts liberties also come the original scenes found in the book and cartoon. No scenes better than when the evil, maladjusted Grinch steals Christmas. Its fabulous. Then theres what they added. Ever wondered what made the Grinch so grouchy? Its in there. Ever wonder what the Grinch eats? Or does by himself up in that cave? Its in there. There is actually a lot of great stuff in this film and Im dying to tell you all of it, but I dont want to spoil your fun.
I just saw the film an hour ago and Im toying with calling it a classic. I cant imagine this movie not becoming a part of my Christmas and my kids and so on. If that annoying Tim Allen movie can be big, or even Chevy Chases Christmas adventure, why not Jim Carreys? For this, there is no doubt: The Grinch will become as much a part of our holidays as egg nog, blinking lights, and snow. May The Grinch bring holiday cheer for years and years.
