The Smashing Pumpkins have had a history of many ups and downs. Personally, I enjoyed Gish, marveled at Siamese Dream, was held unsure by Mellon Collie, turned around by Adore, and lost by Machina. The Smashing Pumpkins have just released their Greatest Hits album. However, it’s a bit of a weird album. The first disc called Rotten Apples is full of radio hits and two new tracks.
Rotten Apples:
The hits:
“Cherub Rock” is one hell of a bastard child.
“Today” is the song I fell in love with the first time I heard it.
“Disarm” is pure soul.
“Bullet With Butterfly Wings” is diesel, but not necessarily great.
“1979” is good, great? We can debate.
“Tonight, Tonight” is epic in sound.
“Ava Adore” is luscious.
There are some questionable tracks on here, like “Landslide” and “Stand Inside Your Love”. Even lower down the ladder is “Real Love”, which is a previously unreleased track. There is an unreleased and untitled track that is quite good and a very interesting surprise. However, the few tracks from Siamese Dream and Mellon Collie hardly do them justice.
Judas O is a so-called follow up to the b-sides and rarities collection, Pisces Iscariot. The most notable tracks are the lovely “Sparrow”, “Set The Ray”, and “Waiting”.
There are some interesting tracks on Judas O, but the first disc brought me back to days of leaves falling and Smashing Pumpkins calling and reminding me that today is the greatest day.
