Tom Petty – Echo

Tom Petty
Artist: Tom Petty
Title: Echo
Label: Reprise
Rating: 7/10

In a day when bands come and go like the seasons, Tom Petty has survived the storm. Petty’s latest album, Echo, is proof that rock ‘n’ roll is still alive and kicking. Of the fifteen tracks on the album, you’ll be hard-pressed to find even one that you won’t be singing along to. Tom Petty’s simplicity is key. He knows what we expect and he delivers.

I can’t help but like the radio track “Free Girl Now”, and while it is the song that I am most familiar with, any of the songs here could make a radio single. The Dylan-esque “Billy The Kid” is another of my favorites. “I Don’t Wanna Fight” is straight-up rock ‘n’ roll and just a little bit punk. Imagine that coming from Petty.

You must remember that Tom Petty has a great band, and when he doesn’t get the praise he deserves, the Heartbreakers also go unnoticed. They haven’t been together, making their way around in the music business for almost twenty-five years, because of their good looks and pomp. As Tom says in “No More”, “It ain’t gonna do it if it ain’t real.” You can’t get any more real than Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers. Great album.
