As new trends come and go, one thing has remained a constant since Black Sabbath and Deep Purple tuned it down and played superfuzzed rock. That constant is a dedication by many underground bands to 70’s era psychedelic rock, which is exactly what Nebula does. Comprised of former members of Fu Manchu, Nebula’s Let it Burn is a bottomed out fuzz monster that will have any fan of heavy blues digging through record shop racks in hopes of finding this relatively obscure release. Relapse records added two bonus tracks to Let it Burn, which had been an indie release before they picked it up and decided to re-release the monumental first from a band sure to explode onto the underground scene in the coming months.
Each track is a hypnotizing magic carpet ride. The only exception is the final EP track, “Raga in the Blood Shot Pyramid”, which is an acoustic gem that jams the desert sound for six minutes. The two new tracks, “Sonic Titan” and “Devil’s Liquid”, portray a band on the verge of heading to the upper levels of the Kyuss inspired stoner rock genre. With grooving slides and completely heady interludes, “Sonic Titan” could find its way into the classics vault mere months after this release. It is simply that tight. Nebula may be classified as a stoner band, but the tag has gotten them some well-deserved press recently in major magazines GQ and Rolling Stone. Let it Burn is sure to be an essential for any space rock fan, and judging from the experience of Nebula’s members, the ride will only be getting better.
