Moa is a delicious import from Iceland with an unearthly voice. Music is in her blood. She was classically trained in piano and having tried blues and jazz, and even lounge singing, she has released Universal, a spacey electronic-pop album. Her sublime voice is wrapped in sometimes eerie, sometimes almost disco, grooves.
“Raining In My Heart” is an energized song with a definite ’70’s sound. There is also a remix included that is more danceable and fun; the teasing and seductive “Joy and Pain”. Moa’s voice ranges from a growl to a sweet purr and this song showcases that. “Tenderly” is sweet and velvety. It is a lush little love song that keeps resurfacing in my head.
Moa has an amazing voice and the music is good, but Universal gets monotonous and the lyrics are nothing special. While her diverse musical experience gives her many sources to draw from to create this sexy and smooth album, a very definite sound permeates each song, making Universal a little bland.
