Matchbox Twenty – Mad Season

Matchbox Twenty
Artist: Matchbox Twenty
Title: Mad Season
Label: Atlantic
Rating: 5/10

It took Matchbox Twenty four years to follow up their debut album. Since then, frontman Rob Thomas won a Grammy for the hit “Smooth”. He might now be having second thoughts about leaving that song with Santana.

The opening track, “Angry”, finds Thomas telling the world he isn’t angry anymore. Quite a change of pace since it was “Push”, the song about being pissed and heartbroken, that put Matchbox Twenty on the map originally. “Bent” is interesting more for its melody and instrumentation than its significance. “Bed Of Lies” is tender and plays the heart card well. Rob Thomas opts for pop candy on “Leave”. Then, finally, Matchbox Twenty finds themselves doing what they do best, which is rocking on the track “Stop”. This is the first track that actually turned me on at all. The album winds up with “You Won’t Be Mine”, done with a jazzy touch.

This is a less than spectacular showing from Matchbox Twenty. I expected too much and didn’t get it.
