Ol’ Dirty Bastard might not be the world’s best rapper, but on occasion he might just be one of the most entertaining. Many times he’s as funny as a comedian, and can also be as easily annoying as a headache. In a matter of seconds, he goes from flowing like a real mc to being as unentertaining and uninteresting as Biz Markie. At his best, ODB is a force; at his worst, he is embarrassing.
Need an example of embarrassing? “You Don’t Want To Fuck With Me”. This track spoils a great orchestral background and production with the annoying slurs of the track’s title. And ODB trying to be a lounge singer with Lil’ Mo on “Good Morning Heartache” is a humiliating display of either a lack of talent or taste, or both. On what track does ODB show that the force is with him? “Got Your Money”. Not only is this track funny, but it’s also as entertaining as anything ODB has ever released. “Rollin’ Wit You” is powerful. “Getting’ High” isn’t a grand display, but it’s not to be missed. And it is probably the second best track on the album, but that’s not saying much. A few notable tracks are “Recognize”, “I Can’t Wait”, and “I Want Pussy”.
One or two tracks don’t make for a good record. ODB is talented, but this album lacks any cohesion. He is all over the place, and it shows. The lack of cohesion is heard within almost every song. If an album doesn’t seem to fit together, it can still work, but when a song is all over the place, it just sounds weak. This album as a whole is a lot like it sounds song to song: weak.
