Lucy Pearl – Lucy Pearl

Lucy Pearl
Artist: Lucy Pearl
Title: Lucy Pearl
Label: Beyond
Rating: 7/10

Lucy Pearl is a super group made up of Raphael Saadiq, formerly of Tony Toni Tone, Dawn Robinson, formerly of En Vogue, and Ali Shaheed Muhammad, Formerly of A Tribe Called Quest.

Ali lays down some tight beats. Add Saadiq and Robinson, and this group has a real chemistry that’s easy to hear. The album is not your everyday R&B fare. The power and intimacy comes from a real bass and guitar work.

“Dance Tonight” is a sultry number. “LaLa” has the sex appeal of a duet, but it’s more substantial, tighter. “Everyday” is another chance to hear this vocal tandem shine. I was surprised that a track called “Can’t Stand Your Mother” could sound so strong.

Robinson leaves her mark on “Don’t Mess With My Man”, and she dives deep into the rocker, “Hollywood”. Then there is the almost En Vogue “They Can’t”. The last track brings Q-Tip and Snoop Dogg on board for “You”. Even without the guest artists, Lucy Pearl stands out as a force to be reckoned with.
