Ludacris – The Red Light District

Ludacris
Artist: Ludacris
Title: The Red Light District
Label: Def Jam
Rating: 6.5/10

CORPORATE LINE: One listen to the bumpin’ and bass blasted The Red Light District and it’s pretty apparent that this multi platinum artist has not only set a goal but also nailed it. Of course what else would you expect from this Dirty South ambassador? Since he first exploded in TK Ludacris has emerged not only as a chart topper and hit maker (his Def Jam South cds Back For The First Time, Word of Mouf and Chicken N Beer have sold over 10 million copies) but also an influential label head, in demand cameo king and up and coming actor. A mere 4 short years in the game, Ludacris has proven that he has the tenacity and talent to push hip-hop music, and himself to new heights. O’ Reilly be damned.

THE GREAT:
“Child of the Night” f/Nate Dogg – Ludacris gets deep and it works by taking his style beyond the usual club-banger.
“Large Amounts” – Ludacris has a sweet beat to work with and drops a hot rhyme about being smart with his money—even discussing retirement funds—and that is far from the norm.

THE AVERAGE:
“Number One Spot” – Lucacris should get props for rhyming over the Austin Powers theme and getting Dora the Explorer into rhyme. He’ll get props but this isn’t the usual Luda highlight.
“Blueberry Yum Yum” – A new style for Ludacris that will get compared to Nelly but its actually straight from the pages of Bones, Thugs & Harmony—who did it much better.
“Potion” – Luda bounces without potent lyrics through Timbaland’s hot beat.
“Put Your Money” f/DMX – The collaboration between Ludacris and DMX had potential to explode.

THE BAD:
“Pass Out” – Certainly the weakest lyrics on the entire record.
FRANKLY: Ludacris is pulled into many directions on Red Light District; thug style, club-bangers, and some eccentric tracks. Ludacris is best when he tries to be something different because no one can do that better. There are a million thug-life rappers and only one Ludacris—stick with the schtick because its that Luda at his best.
