From country to pop, Shelby Lynne’s terrific voice transcends. The first track, “Your Lies”, illustrates this point perfectly. “Life Is Bad” has a Sheryl Crow twang but leans as much toward country as it does toward pop.
“Gotta Get Back” sounds like a whole lot of country. I’m not sure where the line is supposed to be drawn between her country career and her new pop-rock one. I can’t tell if this is a country record trying to be passed off as pop, or if Shania Twain has had that much of an impact on the music industry that there is no longer a line to be drawn.
As beautiful as Shelby Lynne’s album sounds, the slowing tempo toward the end brings it to a halt. I Am Shelby Lynne reminds me a lot of Sheryl Crow’s brilliant Tuesday, minus all of the big hits.
