With the year rapidly coming to a close, now is the time to reminisce. It seems like every genre of music is being bombarded with some form of greatest hits compilation. This year’s slot for pop culture boy bands-The Backstreet Boys.
With two of the boys recently married, AJ fresh out of rehab, and the Black And Blue tour coming to an end, the Boys are making one last-ditch effort to cash in on the musical pony. The Hits – Chapter One features the most popular of The Backstreet Boys’ tunes from three previous albums. All in all it may not be their best, but it’s the ones we’ve heard over and over on radio stations across America.
So what’s on the CD? Oh, you know, the typical: “Quit Playing Games With My Heart”, “Show Me The Meaning Of Being Lonely”, “Larger Than Life”, “As Long As You Love Me”, “Everybody”, “Shape of My Heart”, and “The One”, just to name a few. But more importantly than what songs are actually on the CD is what songs are missing. Though these songs are known as their greatest, are they really their best? What ever happened to “That’s What She Said”, a single released only on the Burger King edition of the Backstreet Boys CDs? And what about that alternate version of “I Want It That Way”, “No Good-Byes”? The song finally made sense but it’s nowhere to be found. What’s the point of throwing these songs out there and then leaving them to fall at the waste side? A greatest hits release seems to me the perfect vehicle for these songs to resurface and gain more exposure.
There are so many unanswered questions leading me to believe the worst: The Backstreet Boys’ career is slowly coming to an end. Though they offer one new hit, “Drowning”, it’s not enough to make this purchase worthwhile. Why release only one new hit and slap it on a greatest hits album instead of an entirely new release? Frankly, as a diehard fan, I’m a bit disappointed.
