Kelis – Kaleidoscope

Kelis
Artist: Kelis
Title: Kaleidoscope
Label: Virgin
Rating: 7/10

Kelis could be to hip-hop what Alanis was to pop-rock. “Good Stuff” is sultry. Quickly you get the burning “Caught Out There”, this being the track that everyone seems to know as of late, with the chorus “I hate you so much right now!” The song has more depth than just an angry chorus and scream of angst at the end.

My absolute favorite tracks happen midway through this album. “Suspended” and “Ghetto Children” are power and joy. Time doesn’t wipe away these tracks’ appeal as they showcase Kelis’ depth. She is no one hit wonder. “Mafia” is pseudo-Madonna with a mix of hip-hop that Madonna could never touch.

Kelis has a voice that could last a lifetime and still appeal to the masses. This album has body and soul. The Neptunes produced a fabulous record that played perfectly to Kelis’ strengths. This is the kind of album you look forward to listening to.
