Since this is the third part of the series, the life of Shawn Carter must be pretty damn interesting. The big question is whether Shawn Carter and Jay-Z are one in the same personality. No matter, Jay-Z continues to rhyme outside of the box. He brings the sort of legitimacy to hardcore rap that is powerful yet scary.
Jay-Z is a powerful rapper and his rhymes are just as strong. The surprise was Mariah Carey showing up on the track “Things That U Do”. Another cool combo is Jay-Z and Dr. Dre. “Watch Me” is Dre laying it out as Jay-Z works the mic.
“Dope Man” is a view from the inside. “Is That Yo Bitch” gets it going into the bedroom and brings the walls down. Track to track, this album is pretty strong. The hidden track does nothing more than fill space, but you can easily avoid it. Jay-Z can rest easy knowing that his life has been well documented. Even though this doesn’t hold up to the first two, it doesn’t have to. Each record has its own life, all of which revolve around Shawn Carter. In the future, maybe we can get a little less chest- thumping and more stories real or unreal.
