Hello,
My name is Chris and I have been asked to write a few words about the band Deckard, for whom I sing and play guitar.
Three of our number, including myself, grew up in a small town called Stewarton which is twenty miles south of Glasgow in Scotland. I have known Grant McFarlane (guitar, backing vocals) since nursery school where he first started getting me into trouble. Bobby Dunn is related in some distant manner to Grant and used to impress us with his bass playing exploits in the local bands that were the rivals of our own first ventures into Rock and Roll. We encountered our drummer, Gen Matthews, in London and he became a good friend before signing up for our collective cause.
A few years ago, when the four of us started playing together, we quickly realised the potential of some of the tunes we were banging out. A deal was arranged with Kinetic/Reprise and we sought out a producer who could guide us through the rapids and rigours of making a great record. Nick Launay (Semisonic, Girls vs Boys, Silverchair) was the man with the right stuff and he set about harvesting our creativity in a four month spell either side of the turn of '99. From this emerged our album, which is due for release early in the next millenium.
As a taster for the forthcoming album an EP will be released on the 19th of October. "The Deckard EP" features the debut single "What Reason" along with three other tracks recorded during the album sessions.
As regards how we sound, of course it is best for your ears to be the judge, but this short list of influences both past and present should allow you some indication of where our hearts lie on the musical map. From the great songs of The Beatles and Radiohead, through the tragic beauty of Queen's less pompous moments to the power of The Smashing Pumpkins and the Foo Fighters.
We look forward to an American adventure in the new year when we expect to be playing coast to coast from the North to the South. Oh! and on a final note to answer the most often asked question of a new band, we took our name from the replicant hunting hero of the sci-fi classic "Bladerunner".
Chris Gordon,
Deckard.
