Tevin Campbell – The Best of Tevin Campbell

Tevin Campbell
Artist: Tevin Campbell
Title: The Best of Tevin Campbell
Label: Qwest
Rating: 4.5/10

Tevin Campbell was billed as the next Michael Jackson when he first emerged at thirteen almost ten years ago. He has never really lived up to those lofty expectations. Tevin can sing like nobody’s business, but there is only one Michael Jackson.

“Can We Talk” was a huge hit in 1994 and sounds just as innocent today. Also from the same release is the soft “Always In My Heart”. The track I remember most associated with Campbell is the hit “Round And Round”. Along with “One Song” and “Tell Me What You Want Me To Do”, it showcases the promise of a young Tevin Campbell.

The problem with Tevin is that they haven’t been able to show us he’s matured with his music as much as he has in real life. Michael Jackson went from boy to, well, something, and his music matured so fast that it made your head spin. Tracks like “Shhh” just don’t convince me.

Tevin Campbell just doesn’t have a truly strong body of work. Perhaps in another ten years he’ll deserve The Best Of, but not now. There are really only about five or six songs here that are hits. Perhaps in time he’ll change all of that.
