Supernatural

Studio: Warner Bros.
Rating: 7.5/10

THE STORY: Bound by tragedy and blood to a dangerous, otherworldly mission, two brothers travel in mysterious back roads of the country in their ’67 Chevy Impala, searching for their missing father–and hunting down every evil supernatural force they encounter along the way. Bring home all 22 episodes of the first season of the thrilling new show, Supernatural along with must-own bonus features. Supernatural is a completely new kind of thrill ride that takes viewers on a journey into the dark world of the unexplained.

THE REVIEW: Warner Bros. lost many of their other supernatural shows so they had to find some replacement for the great numbers of fans for shows like The X-Files. Supernatural doesn’t fill that void entirely—but it does a great job of give us a fix.

One difference with Supernatural is that they fill up the show with hunky guys which makes Supernatural look more like Supernatural 90210 than Buffy the Vampire Slayer—whose cast was more interesting and wacky than beautiful. Supernatural is also much more disturbing. Buffy was a little silly with its evil characters and certainly less bloody.

Supernatural uses revenge—which is used in films, television shows, and every other form of entertainment—to explain why the two brothers are on a mission. It was used in The X-Files, the recent Night Stalker, and most other show about the supernatural—including superheroes. Supernatural never strays from revenge—however they do stray from the occasional episode about the supernatural. Every show starts the same with a victim and ends the same—the brothers working it out.

Even with all of its seeming issues, Supernatural is spooky fun. As with Buffy, there is nothing more entertaining then watching people go hand-to-hand with monsters. The good thing about Supernatural is its continuing narrative about the brothers finding their father and the demon that killed their mothers.

THE EXTRAS: Include are two episodic commentaries: “Pilot” featuring creator Eric Kripke, director David Nutter, and producer Peter Johnson and “Phantom Traveler” featuring Jared Padalecki and Jensen Ackles. Also included is “Supernatural: Tales from the Edge of Darkness” which is a 15 minute never-before-seen making of documentary. “Day in the Life of Jared and Jensen” is a never-before-seen featurette focusing on Jared and Jensen on the set of Supernatural. Finally, thrown in for good measure is a gag reel, unaired scenes, and a still gallery.

FRANKLY: Anyone that loves the supernatural will love Supernatural. It’s Halloween for twenty-two episodes. I love scary movies and Supernatural definitely gave me a fix of excitement and moments of jumping out of my seat. Supernatural is truly one of the best shows that almost no one watched.
