CORPORATE LINE: While investigating the bloody aftermath of a grisly murder, Detective Eric Mason (Donnie Wahlberg) has the feeling that it is the work of Jigsaw, the notorious killer who disappeared leaving a trail of bodies – and parts – behind.
And Mason is right.
Jigsaw is at work again. But instead of two people locked in a room with only one unthinkable way out, there are eight. Eight strangers – unaware of their connection to each other — forced to play out a game that challenges their wits and puts their lives in jeopardy.
THE MOVIE: There hasn’t been a good horror franchise in years. Horror flicks are the most susceptible to collapsing under the lack of creativity. Usually they turn into a comedy or a shell of the original.
Jigsaw becomes a bit of MacGyver as he must come up with more and more clever traps and tragic endings. Jigsaw is more prominent as he tortures and torments eight individuals. The traps are ramped up and the decisions the victims must make in hopes of escaping are seriously disturbing. But that is what made the first film such horrible fun.
THE EXTRAS:
The commentary with director Darren Lynn Bousman, actors Donnie Wahlberg and Beverley Mitchell give an interesting conversation. It’s not deep—but enjoyable.
“Jigsaw’s Game” – A 3 minute EPK—too short to be close to interesting.
“The Traps of Jigsaw: The Head Trap, The Needle Pit, The Hand Trap and The Furnace” – These are four short featurettes that give an inside look at the effects.
“Bits and Pieces: The Props of Jigsaw” – A four-and-a-half minute featurette that goes into the items used to murder the victims.
FRANKLY: If you liked Saw then you’ll really like Saw II. We aren’t duped with the terrible ending or amateur acting. Saw II is even more disturbing and over the top. This is as disgusting a film that has come out in so long it almost feels like a great genre busting film. It’s not nearly that good.
