The Lion King 1 ½

The Lion King 1 ½
Cast: Animation
Studio: Disney
Rating: 4.5/10

Corporate Line: In this hysterical update to THE LION KING, Timon, Pumbaa, and the rest of the gang reunite to explain how events really unfolded. Packed with funny, behind-the-scenes stories, Timon and Pumbaa explain what really happened when King Mufasa introduced his heir and the secrets behind other happenings in the story. Nathan Lane and Matthew Broderick, along with the original voice cast, again bring to life some of film’s most beloved characters. In addition to the new spin on this timeless story, there’s a new song — “That’s All I Need.”

The Story: There is a reason this went straight to video. The Lion King was great. This, sort of, sequel is not on par. The Lion King 1 ½ is a retelling of The Lion King from the points of view of Timon and Pumbaa. You’d think that sounds great – right? It just wasn’t necessary.

We already know these characters; we know what the characters were about yet found it necessary to give the kids more of them. The Lion King 1 ½ starts by showing how Timon and Pumbaa meet each other and then meet Simba. Along the way they have some little adventures but it’s all to simple, some little adventures. Would they have been better for a television series?

Frankly: The Lion King 1 ½ appears to be nothing more than a money making pursuit and that is a bitter pill to swallow. Anything successful that Disney can sequel and poorly crafted gets dumped straight to video. It’s time they focused on making better original features and less unoriginal, unimaginative cash cows.
