Rating: 8/10

The Corporate line:
A Hero for All Ages! The first-ever Astro Boy series created in full color, children and adults alike will enjoy the timeless, fanciful adventures of Astro—a futuristic combination of Pinocchio and Superman who learns a timely message about the triumph of kindness, compassion and selflessness in the face of discrimination and human prejudice.

What’s it all about?
This set features the entire color version of Astro Boy that originally aired in 1980. Created by Japan’s “God of Comics,” Osamu Tezuka, this version was adapted from his original 1963 black-and-white series. This series features the beloved robot child in all his boyish glory, doing his best to make things right in the world. Similar in look and feel to Speed Racer, and a number of other classic Japanese programs, Astro Boy is an endearing classic.
The story revolves around scientist Dr. Boynton who loses his beloved son and seeks to replace him with the man-made “Astro.” Astro is a 100,000-horsepower super-being with jets in his legs and lasers in his fingers. But aside form his mechanical veneer, he possesses a gentle soul, and a keen understanding of right and wrong (a common theme in many Japanese anime). Astro fights criminals, and those who maintain anti-robot prejudices, and never loses his temper or holds a grudge. He’s an exemplary member of society, spreading compassion wherever he goes.

The Features:
This mammoth set features 51 half-hour episodes with over 25 hours, on seven DVDs, plus extras including galleries and alternative openings. There’s also a nice 24-page booklet.

Overall:
Astro Boy is a fun time for kids and adults alike. Although the main characters are eternally optimistic—which can get a tad monotonous—there’s still enough kitsch to go around, making it a quirky and enjoyable experience. And for anime purists, it’s essential. Check it out!
