Tak: the Great Juju Challenge

Tak: the Great Juju Challenge
Game: Tak: the Great Juju Challenge
Platform: Xbox
Studio: THQ
Rating: 7/10

GAME DESCRIPTION: TAK: THE GREAT JUJU CHALLENGE for the Xbox is the third installment in THQ’s TAK series. Shaman Tak and his friend Lok return. THE GREAT JUJU CHALLENGE is a survival race where members from each tribe compete for the grand prize. Tak and Lok, representing the Pupanunu tribe, work though each level together, using their unique abilities and cooperation skills to get ahead of their competition in the JUJU CHALLENGE. Tak, the original star of the series, is shorter, smaller, and much faster than Lok. Lok, however, is much stronger and can carry Tak on his shoulders and throw him across chasms. Players have the ability to switch between the two at any time and will often need to do so to get through each level. Players will encounter a variety of puzzles throughout the game, including matching puzzles and gate-opening mazes where the two characters must split up to stand on switches. As the game progresses, players will come across new shaman upgrades and powers for both Tak and Lok, expanding their abilities. A two player cooperative mode is also available, allowing a friend to take control of Tak or Lok for double the fun. Players who like a challenging platformer with lots of puzzles will find that TAK: THE GREAT JUJU CHALLENGE is exactly what they’re looking for. The unique characters, entertaining, humorous story, and large variety of puzzles will keep TAK fans playing for hours.

PLAY: Tak is a platform that follows strict levels. There are checkpoints that are timed leading to a much less relaxed atmosphere. You have a countdown and must finish certain challenges within that time otherwise you are really finished.

Tak is a franchise and those who have played the previous versions will find a lot in common—however there is also a lot that is new here. The one thing that seemed a little irritating was the feeling of being stuck in a linear game. There are so many open platform games on the market that once you have to go back it’s not so easy. There are however many puzzles and interesting enemies.

GRAPHICS: The environments are gorgeous. Most of the graphics are colorful and full of life. From a distance the game looks brilliant. The only exceptions are the textures as you get closer.

SOUND: The voice acting is quite good. The music is often monotonous.

FRANKLY: Tak: the Great Juju Challenge has its good and bad. It is fun to have a little nostalgia when playing the levels. And yet that is exactly the biggest problem with Tak. You have these levels that often get repetitive and seem overly-extended for the sake of increasing the game’s length. Kids will love Tak as the learning curve isn’t difficult and the platform lends itself to being a bit easier for children.
