Pro Race Driver

Pro Race Driver
Game: Pro Race Driver
Platform: PS2
Studio: Codemasters
Rating: 9/10

Game Company’s Description: Ryan McKane, a test driver with gasoline running in his veins, spends his life struggling against his father’s disappointment, while his brother’s phenomenal racetrack success overshadows every minor victory he achieves. When his father perishes in an octane-fuelled blaze of fire on the asphalt that he loved, Ryan’s frustrated ambition galvanizes into an unrelenting determination to triumph over all opposition and become world champion Pro Race Driver.

Look: The cars are modeled after the original production cars. The lightening is wonderful, but what really catches your eye is the damage to your car. From the back window shattering, when you get jammed against the wall by an opponent, or when your bumper gets turn half way off and drags behind you. Then there is the sod flying up when you slide off the track and into the grass and dirt. It’s amazing the detail put into this game. You have different views you can take from being behind your car to flying right in the cockpit.

Feel: Depending on what controller you are using this game can be fantastic or frustrating. First we’ll talk about the regular PS2 controller. It’s very touchy and you have to adapt to that. If you try and push the controller all the way left or right your car will be out of control. There definitely is a lot of touch here. If you have the Logitec steering wheel you’ll find the control much better. The problem is if you pause the game the wheel loses it’s functioning.

The AI is well done. You can’t just jump into first place and expect to stay there. If you pass your pit stop when told to stop you’ll get disqualified. Also your opponents don’t give up. They will push and push you until they either push you off the track or win or they lose. So be ready to race to win.

Hear: The music is lame. The screeching of the tires and motor add the element to the race that you need, but it’s really the pit crew that you need to be listening to.

Frankly: If you are tired of finding bad games then look no further. With the great story mode, unlockables, and extra goodies this game is a must buy. You’ll be playing this one for months.
