Blue October – Foiled

Blue October
Artist: Blue October
Title: Foiled
Label: Universal
Rating: 6/10

FILE UNDER: Generic rock.

CORPORATE LINE: Foiled isn’t just about despair, delusion and dementia. “X Amount of Words” is “Subterranean Homesick Blues” with a lively New Order/Depeche Mode dance beat. On the other hand, “Drill a Wire Through My Cheek” is a harrowing glimpse into Justin’s Dr. Jekyll-Mr. Hyde, a devil on one shoulder, an angel on the other, connected by the titular “wire through my cheek,” which Justin is willing to pull to defeat his dark side.

THE GOOD:
“Overweight” – Sounds bigger than it truly is—it has the feeling of being epic and yet like “She’s My Ride Home” it doesn’t bring it home. “Overweight” goes one giant step further.

THE AVERAGE:
“You Make ME Smile” – An unremarkable song that is as quirky as it is melodic.
“She’s My Ride Home” – Singer Justin Furstenfeld can almost convince the listener that this is an epic song. It sounds big—the problem is that it lacks any real connection.
“Into The Ocean” – Maybe we’re all daft—but this sounds like Men At Work. “Who can it be now?”
“Let It Go” – Slow and again nothing to write home about.
“Amount Of Words” – The techno beat and electro vibe doesn’t fit the rest of the album.

THE BAD:
“Drilled A Wire Through My Cheek” – Leftover turkey.

FRANKLY: Blue October can’t offer one song that sticks in your subconscious. Tracks like “Overweight” and “She’s My Ride Home” prove Blue October can write strong songs. Foiled lacks the ability to knock listeners out with a great hook. Blue October never find their way out of sounding generic.
