The Mars Volta – De-Loused In The Comatorium

The Mars Volta
Artist: The Mars Volta
Title: De-Loused In The Comatorium
Label: Universal
Rating: 7/10

Company Line: De-Loused In The Comatorium, the astonishing first album by The Mars Volta is an iridescent, fearless, brain-busting hour of music, a fictionalized celebration of Julio Venegas’ life. Based on a story written by Cedric, it is a concept album in which the hero tries to commit suicide by overdosing on morphine. Instead of dying, he falls into a coma for a week, and experiences fantastic adventures in his dreams, elemental battles between the good and bad aspects of his conscience. At the end, he emerges from the coma, but chooses to die.

The Good:
“Televators” – This is one track that could make you cry. You can feel the pain throughout and not that emotions aren’t enough but the song is gorgeous.
“Son Et Lumiere” – I’m not even sure what in the hell is going on here or being sung about. There is this absolute bizarre electronic refrain that dances in the background almost distracting you from the impending loss.
“This Apparatus Must Be Unearthed” – A terrorizing pulse emanates about four minutes in and caps what is a glorious track.
“Inertiatic Esp” – The urgency seems almost futile. It’s a pain of lose and the wonderment of how this music will take it away.

The Marginal:
“Roulette Dares (the haunt of)” – A scary trip.

The Ugly:

Frankly: Bizarre but beautiful.
