3LW – Interview

3LW

How is life?

Everyone: Good!

Keily: We’re really happy that our album is platinum right now.

Naturi: And we are really excited about our tour with NSYNC and the Independent Tour with Destiny’s Child and Eve. So we’ve had dance rehearsals all this week. We’ve had to really work overtime.

I saw you have some big stadium shows with NSYNC.

Naturi: Actually we are really excited. We are excited about performing for their audience and sharing a stage with them.

How much has life changed?

Adrienne: Life has changed a lot. We travel a lot. It’s weird to wake up in a new city every day. School is on the road so we don’t get to go to school anymore. Band rehearsal is really great.

Were you all each working and doing something similar before 3LW or has life just been turned on its head?

Naturi: We all did singing in our communities back home. We did go to regular school before, so that has been a big change.

Was working on the album the first experience you had in a studio?

Adrienne: Yes. It was the first time we ever recorded professionally. We were really nervous. We wanted to do everything right and hope the producers liked us. We were really comfortable and had so much fun.

When was the album done?

Keily: We started recording the album last summer. We have actually started recording another one that we hope to have out this coming fall.

When did you get together to form 3LW?

Naturi: We were brought together and like a week later we were working together.

Adrienne: We’ve been together for about a year and a half.

How did the chemistry come together?

Keily: When we first got together, we really didn’t get along that well. It’s like going to a new school. You wonder if you will like the others and if you’ll get along together. But living together and being together so much, we’ve grown to be like sisters.

Did you see either “Popstars” or “Making The Band”?

Keily: We saw them. I think they are very dramatized.

Adrienne: They are so dramatized. They are always crying, ‘I can’t take it anymore.’ It’s kind of like a soap opera. You don’t get that upset like that, but it is cool that people see into what does happen a bit behind the scenes.

Naturi: We don’t consider ourselves manufactured at all. We think we are here for a purpose and were doing our own things before this. We are here to make music.

Do you think the cool thing about the shows is that people get a chance to understand that you as a group work really hard?

Naturi: Yeah. Sometimes it’s very contrived though.

Adrienne: The hard work is really, but…

Keily: …it’s very tv oriented. Seeing people cry everyday just, hard work is not crying every day. You have to try to make it fun.

Naturi: It’s about being strong, not being weak. You have to be strong through it all and make yourself stronger every day, not making a scene by crying.

Speaking of working, are all of you natural dancers?

Adrienne: Naturi used to do a lot of dancing when she was young. She did a lot of jazz, ballet, and other stuff. Keily has been dancing her whole life. I’ve danced, but nothing choreographed. So I was the least experienced.

Was it hard to learn and get organized?

Adrienne: We have a choreographer, Showtime, who really helped a lot. Actually he helped us on our new video “Playas Gon’ Play ” which just premiered on TRL.

How do you react when you see yourselves on Mtv or hear your song on the radio?

Naturi: We’re like, ‘Dang, we did that?’ We cannot believe we were dancing so hard and did all these moves.

Keily: When we first got together, our moves were just typical girl group stuff. We’re trying to show we can dance and sing and do both well.

Are there groups you look up to?

Keily: We look up to TLC. They are one of the biggest girl groups ever.

Adrienne: We really look up to En Vogue and Destiny’s Child. We are so excited to share a stage with them.

Are you often glad that there are three of you to help each other through this?

Keily: We are really happy. Sometimes we see artists who are all alone and we feel for them. It’s great because we have two other people that can relate to how you feel. Like if I’m tired, they say, ‘I’m tired too, but we have to do this.’ It’s great because we give each other a boost.

Do you keep each other’s egos in check too?

Adrienne: We keep each other grounded. We are regular girls. We just love to perform and make music. We know that it’s not all because of us. There are many people behind us that have helped to make us who we are. We are very fortunate.

Do you think about your future?

Keily: We are always thinking to the future. We are already planning the new album.

When you found out about the Destiny’s Child and NSYNC shows, what were you feeling?

Keily: We were really excited, but because we felt that it was the chance we needed to bring our talents to a wider audience. We think we can take this group to another level. We will be singing live and we want to give our audience a wonderful show.

Do you get a chance to interact with fans?

Adrienne: We talk to a lot of our fans. We go on our website and interact with fans on our message board. We are actually close friends with the fans who run our message board.

Do you find fans asking how you made it and for advice?

Keily: We got a lot of questions like how did you get signed? How did you learn how to sing and dance? How do you guys get along? People always wonder because girl groups seem to always have these catty fights. We plan on staying together and being friends forever because we believe in each other. It’s important to respect what the other girls bring to the group. Most girl groups don’t do that because they have one lead singer. We all sing here, we allow our personalities to shine together.

What is it like to have people your age and older looking up to you?

Naturi: It’s amazing. It’s a little scary at times, but it’s cool. Everything we stand up for we really represent, like not doing drugs, not drinking, and stuff like that. We are real.
